The 5 Ingredients of NEIL'S Mushroom Compost

spent mushroom fruiting block media

The spent blocks are roughly 50% carbon and 50% nitrogen after harvest. The blocks are then de-packaged, shredded and actively composted for 21-24 days reaching temperatures over 130 degrees.  The material is then aged for an additional 30 days prior to becoming the main ingredient.

harvested mushroom trimmings

Mushroom farming is labor intensive.  Each fruiting block is carefully harvested and trimmed.  The trimmings become the main food source for our red wriggler worms.

red wriggler worm castings

Organic? YES.  Vegan?  NO.  There are arguments here, but any animal in captivity crosses the ethical line.  We are proud of our little bio processors and care for them as best we can.  Their castings are essential to our formula.  Without the castings, the biochar is not "BIO," it's just charcoal.

inoculated charcoal (biochar)

We believe true "biochar" for agricultural use should be charged with micronutrients prior to soil amending and our method of charging incorporates worm castings and compost tea.  Both the castings and compost create a byproduct known as leachate.  We use this leachate to inoculate our home-made char.  The char absorbs the nutrients and locks them into the carbon structure.  The end result is biochar.

spring water

Moisture content of compost is very important.  We add spring water, nothing else.
